We commissioned an excavator to dig a ditch for utilities. When we were done we still had some rental time left and decided to build a small pond. This is what it looked like after we filled it with some water. Later it has to fill up naturally with rain and run-off water.
After a heavy rain the pond filled up and we put in some small fish we bought at the local market. In the dry season we supply some water from the water tank.
A year later, our fish is grown and ready to be caught, ready for ... Self-sufficiency. (Video Fish Catching)
We catch a fish from our pond, after a year it has grown from 2 centimeters when we buy it in the market to about 30 centimeters today. Local people call it a rhino fish. According to our photo search, it is called a giant gourami. It appears to be used as a farmed food fish and is also used for aquarium purposes.
Lotus flowers everywhere, they grow like crazy, more flowers come out in the pool every day. Sometimes we need to cut the leaves to make room on the surface for the fish to feed. We have to keep in mind that the fish need protection from herons, so we leave enough leaves on the surface.
Our neighbor is not afraid of anything.
The crab's young child is not far away. Rests the question where they come from?
An airbreathing freshwater thai catfish, it did not like our pool and ran away, looking for a better place.
A water snake looking for frogs, actually we like the presence of a snake because at night after a rain, frogs can make loud noises, making a good night's sleep almost impossible.
A snake wants to visit us. It seems to be a "golden tree snake" whose bite is harmless but which will still bite if it feels threatened. This snake is widespread in Thailand. It feeds mainly on small animals such as lizards. It also seems to have its sights set on our young fish in the new pond.
We have never seen so many lotus in one place.
We decided to dig a new, slightly larger pool for fish farming because we had good experience with the fish in the small pool. The fish in the small pool had grown from 2 centimeters to 40 centimeters within two years and were ideal for consumption.
We connected the two pools with a 3 inch pipe to balance the water.
We planted new beautiful small blue water lilies in the new pool. During the dredging, water from the surrounding land was already seeping into the pool. We also pumped water into the pool to give the water lilies good roots. The white rock visible in the picture appears to be lime.
Today we filled the fish pond with 100 (one hundred) young Nile Tilapias. A Nile Tilapia can weigh up to 5kg and reach a length of 60cm. This fish originally comes from North Africa (Nile) and was farmed all over the world because of its good taste. Now it's our turn!
The young Nile Tilapias are exploring our fish pond. It seems they have no problems with high water temperatures and are able to reproduce from a water temperature of around 24 degrees Celsius. But! What do we have now, after two weeks the new pond was teeming with thousands of small fish in addition to the original fish. Apparently, when we bought the fish, we also got a load of fertilized fish eggs that are now developing.
