Harvested Bamboo shoots. Bamboo shoots are the edible sprouts of bamboo trees. Fresh shoots must be boiled before consuming. It takes lot of cooking time to make them edible.
Bamboo tree with newly grown sprouts. Originally when we bought the land, there were many bamboo trees on our land, most of which we had to remove. We keep some trees on one side of the property.
This larvae is well known in South Africa, known as the larvae of the Bushman arrow-poison beetle Diamphidia Nigroornata. We found this larvae inside of our bamboo tips during harvesting.
We left some of the bamboo roots in the ground. Mushrooms are now growing on these roots, unfortunately we don't know if these mushrooms are edible.
We sowed the beans that we bought at the market in two places. There wasn't a big difference, both grew very quickly.
These beans are thin and long, another variety short and thick has already been ordered and is on its way to us. We will use some of the beans as new seed.
One day harvest enough beans for lunch.
Winged Beans: At the local market we saw a somehow strange looking vegetable. After some investigation it turned out to be Winged Beans. The taste is okay, so we decided to grow it too. Beans appear to grow quite quickly, within 2 weeks we had a nice addition to our vegetable garden.
Cucumbers and beans grow very quickly.
We also bought this cumcumber seed at the market.
Very juicy cucumbers that grow very quickly, just like the beans. Good for fresh vegetables just picked daily. (Actually it is not a vegetable but a fruit because of the flowers). But more important they have a fresh flavor.
Water spinach, vegetable for the fish in our small pool, they are crazy about it. Btw, we built special beds for growing vegetables.
Lemongrass is often used as a fresh fragrance ingredient in Thai cuisine and in salads.
Green chilli plant, unfortunately the plant only lasts one season, but we keep the seeds if the taste is good.
Grown mature green chilli, ready for use to turn food spicy.
Grown mature yellow chilli, ready for use to turn food spicy.
Paprika, it seems Paprica is something different it means peppers. We use a special bag to keep insects away from our paprika.
Paprika ready to eat.
Basil, an herb used in cooking.
Pandan, a very fragrant plant used in Thai cuisine.
Special vegetable for the cows, actually it's grass that cows like very much. We're growing this grass for someone in return for cutting unwanted grass on our land. All the vegetable is unsprayed too.
After a short time after sowing the corn shoots out of the ground.
Shortly afterwards the flowers are visible. Now we're waiting for the corn on the cob.
Finally the first corn cobs are visible.
Our first corn harvest, for the next seed we will use a sweeter variety, this seed was edible but the taste could be better.
